BOSTON — Wilmington Trust returns to Marblehead Race Week on July 28-31 as the official financial services sponsor at the Helly Hansen National Offshore One Design (NOOD) Regatta at the Boston Yacht Club. This is the third year Wilmington Trust has sponsored the premier sailing event.

Wilmington Trust will award the “leader spinnaker” to the leading J/105 class boat in each day’s race, which the crew will have the honor of flying the next day. The overall J/105 winner will take home the leader spinnaker at the end of Race Week.

Wilmington Trust, a provider of wealth and investment management services based in Wilmington, Del., with a Boston office, started the Wilmington Trust Leader Spinnaker tradition in 2014 to recognize the accomplishments of the top teams in the J/105 class races during Marblehead Race Week.

“We are extremely proud about returning as a sponsorship partner for this year’s Marblehead NOOD,” said Chris Casey, Wilmington Trust’s Wealth Advisory market leader in Boston. “It’s a thrill to play even a small part in Marblehead Race Week. The technical precision of the race teams is amazing. Wilmington Trust is honored to continue to support the efforts of both the crews and the Marblehead Racing Association.”

“Wilmington Trust’s Leader Spinnaker is unique to this regatta and to the sport,” says Dave Reed, editor of Sailing World magazine, the 54-year-old sailing media brand that owns the NOOD series. “It’s an outstanding way to recognize a top team during and after the event. As intensely competitive sailors, our J/105 teams will definitely be working that much harder for the opportunity to fly it. In sailboat races it’s better to lead than follow.”

The J/105 crew with the lowest cumulative score at the end of Race Week will be awarded the Wilmington Trust Leader Spinnaker to keep at an awards party on Sunday, July 31. The spinnaker, created by internationally-recognized sailmaker North Sails, is composed of a white background with Wilmington Trust’s name and logo in black.

In 2015, the Wilmington Trust Leader Spinnaker was awarded to Allegro Semplicita, owned by Fred deNapoli.

ABOUT MARBLEHEAD RACE WEEK
The Helly Hansen NOOD Regatta at Marblehead is the fifth event in the annual series organized by Sailing World magazine, a 54-year-old sailing media brand. The regattas are hosted by some of America’s most prestigious yacht clubs, and have grown to become one of the most popular sailing regatta series in the U.S., second only to the America’s Cup. Learn more at www.sailingworld.com/nood-regattas.

Marblehead Race Week is hosted by three major Boston-area yacht clubs—Corinthian Yacht Club, Boston Yacht Club, and Eastern Yacht Club. Race Week is managed by the Marblehead Racing Association (MRA), a volunteer organization comprised of race committee chairs and designated representatives from the three yacht clubs. The MRA is responsible for scheduling and coordinating both one-design and PHRF racing each season.

The MRA is committed to ensuring that Marblehead continues to be one of the world’s premier yacht racing venues. The MRA works to improve the quality of Marblehead racing, while ensuring fun and safety for all competitors. Learn more at www.mheadrace.org
